The Basic Vietnamese Course begins with a guide to pronunciation because Vietnamese is a "tone language" in which the meaning of a word can change when it is pronounced with a different musical pitch or pitch contour. The Vietnamese Course is divided into 15 units, many of which are composed of dialogues, notes, and supplemental vocabulary. The course assumes the student has no prior knowledge of Vietnamese and is fully self-instructional.
